LiDAR Survey: Taking Drone Services in Australia to the Next Level
Drone services in Australia are booming, transforming various sectors with their efficiency and innovative applications. But a powerful new technology is pushing the boundaries even further: LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Let's explore how LiDAR surveys are taking drone services in Australia to the next level.
Beyond Breathtaking Views: The Power of LiDAR
Unlike traditional drone photography that captures high-resolution images, LiDAR survey uses pulsed laser light to generate precise 3D point clouds of a target area. Each laser pulse measures the distance between the drone and the ground, building a point-by-point map with incredible detail. This data goes beyond visuals; it captures the exact dimensions and shapes of objects on the ground.
Tumblr media
Unlocking a World of Applications:
This detailed 3D data from LiDAR surveys unlocks a vast array of possibilities for Australian businesses:
Enhanced Construction Planning:  Accurately measure complex terrain for construction projects, calculate volumes for earthworks, and create 3D models for better planning and cost estimation.
Revolutionizing Infrastructure Management:  Inspect bridges, pipelines, and other infrastructure with pinpoint accuracy, identify potential problems early on, and plan maintenance efficiently.
Optimizing Land Management:  Create detailed topographic maps for forestry, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. LiDAR can even penetrate vegetation to map the ground beneath the canopy.
Rapid Disaster Response:  Quickly assess damage after natural disasters like floods or bushfires, enabling faster and more targeted relief efforts.
The Australian Advantage:
Australia's diverse landscapes, from sprawling outback to intricate coastlines, present unique challenges for traditional surveying methods. LiDAR-equipped drones can navigate these terrains with ease, collecting data in remote areas that might be difficult or dangerous to access on foot. This makes LiDAR surveys a game-changer for projects across the continent.
The Future of Drone Services:
As LiDAR technology integrates seamlessly with drone platforms, we can expect even more exciting advancements in Australian drone services. Imagine a real-time generation of 3D models during surveys, allowing for immediate data analysis and informed decision-making on the spot. The possibilities for industries like mining, environmental conservation, and urban planning are endless.
Forward-thinking Australian businesses are already embracing LiDAR surveys to gain a competitive edge. The ability to collect highly accurate 3D data quickly and cost-effectively is revolutionizing workflows and driving innovation across various sectors.

If you're so desperate for a baby you are OK with them starting out in a warzone maybe you should ask yourself why are you willing to go to that extreme instead of adopting.
People need to realise the lengths we’ll go to’: Ukraine’s surrogacy industry booms amid war
A British couple has described how they met their twins in incubators before having to move to a safe room as an air raid siren sounded Amita Chakravorty and Sham Jagpal had twins via surrogate in Ukraine
By Gabriella Jozwiak December 14, 2024
Juggling feeds and nappy changes is a learning curve for all first-time parents of twins. But when London couple Amita Chakravorty and Sham Jagpal became mum and dad to Rey and Ryo in July this year, they also had to learn to survive missile and drone attacks, as the boys were born through surrogacy in Ukraine.
“It’s been a really crazy journey,” Amita told The i Paper from the couple’s London home while the four month olds napped. “People need to realise the lengths people like us will go to have a baby.”
The couple are among thousands globally choosing the war zone as a surrogacy destination. Despite the dangers and difficulties accessing the country, Ukrainian agencies say business is booming.
Couples come from countries including Pakistan, China, Australia, Spain and Italy. Before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine was the third-most popular for British couples after the US and UK, according to fertility law firm NGO Law.
Since then, more than 1,000 babies have been born through BioTexCom Surrogacy agency alone, according to its legal adviser Denis Herman.
On the day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, about 200 surrogate mothers with this provider were pregnant. “Not even a month passed and we received calls to start or continue surrogacy processes,” he said.
Tumblr media
Amita Chakravorty and Sham Jagpal missed the births of their twins after they arrived early and were confronted with life in a war zone
In addition to war, demand for surrogacy services has also withstood new laws coming into force in Italy. While surrogacy is already illegal in the country, in December a new law will ban couples from having a baby abroad. Herman believes this will not stop Italian couples coming to Ukraine, even though they could face up to two years and a €1m (£832,000) fine.
Alexander Schuster, a lawyer specialising in medical reproductive rights in Italy told The i Paper he would “strongly refrain anyone from going to Ukraine [from Italy] because it’s pretty sure they will have criminal proceedings started under the new law”. However, he believed couples could avoid the sanctions by entering plea bargains if this was their first crime.
For Amita, who suffers endometriosis and adenomyosis, surrogacy was a last resort.
After a decade trying to start a family involving 15 rounds of IVF in four different European countries and three miscarriages, the couple opted for surrogacy with the Ukrainian World Centre of Baby (WCOB) agency in 2023.
“We looked at the UK, Columbia, Mexico – we did our research,” says Sham. Ukraine only accepts married heterosexual couples, or those in a civil partnership, that are medically unable to carry a pregnancy to term. At least one intended parent must be genetically connected to the child – usually the father. If an egg donor is needed, this cannot be the Ukrainian surrogate.
Ukraine was preferable for the couple because Ukrainian law recognises the intended parents as legal guardians from conception. In the UK, the surrogate mother is the child’s legal parent at birth, meaning parental rights have to be transferred by parental order or adoption.
Amita and Sham had their biological materials (embryos, sperm and eggs) already frozen at a clinic in Czechia. WCOB transported these to Ukraine, meaning the couple only had to make one trip to collect their babies.
“We were clearly apprehensive because the country was at war,” said Sham. “But the clinic said everything is functioning normally in Kyiv. It was perfectly open for us to continue with the process.”
Tumblr media
The babies are now four months old and back in the UK
Costs in Ukraine are also markedly lower than other countries. Helen Shumskyh, head of sales at Vireo Agency in Ukraine, said that the cost of surrogacy in Ukraine was between £33,000 and £54,000 for a package, including transport to the country, accommodation, surrogate expenses and agency fees.
In the US costs range from £103,000 to £276,000. In the UK surrogacy is legal, but surrogates cannot be paid, and surrogacy agreements are not enforceable by law.
“The price in Ukraine now is almost the same as it was before the war started,” Shumskyh said. “Usually in surrogacy there is a yearly evaluation of the prices, but no one has increased rates here because we all understand that in our current situation we need to attract customers. After the war finishes, we expect prices to change.”
The agency currently has 15 couples at various stages of their surrogacy journey. Shumskyh says demand increases every month. The company has sought to reassure prospective parents by relocating surrogate mothers to Western cities of Lviv and Ushgorod once they reach 28 weeks of pregnancy. These are far away from the front line and experience fewer attacks. Although surrogates can live in higher-risk eastern regions until then.
Ukrainian surrogate mothers are aged up to 35 and must have already given birth naturally to a healthy child. They receive between £11,700 and £14,200 per pregnancy. Nova Espero agency deputy director Sergey Glushenko said surrogate mothers were “normal, wealthy women” who wanted to help others, as well as make money.
“In 90 per cent of cases the surrogate wants to improve their living conditions, such as buy a new apartment,” Glushenko said. Despite worsening economic conditions in Ukraine, he said the number of women applying to become surrogates had not increased.
Amita and Sham never met their surrogate mother. They missed the birth as the twins arrived unexpectedly almost six weeks prematurely. Because flights to Ukraine are banned, the couple travelled to Poland then by car to Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.
“We were stepping into the unknown,” says Amita. “We passed so many graveyards on the way. It became real that so many people have died.”
Finally the couple met their twins, who were both in incubators. “There are no words to describe the feelings when you see your babies,” Amita recalls. But quickly they were brought back to reality when an air raid sounded and hospital staff moved the babies to a safe room. It was the first of numerous such experiences.
The couple spent many sleepless nights sheltering in their AirBnB bathroom when sirens sounded. On more than one occasion they saw explosions in the sky as air defences shot down enemy drones above them.
On 26 August they took cover in an underground station as Russia attacked Ukraine with 200 missiles and drones, knocking out the power supply. “When we came out, everywhere you could smell chemicals or gunpowder,” said Amita. “At the flat we had no electricity and couldn’t sterilise bottles for the babies’ feeds.”
The couple expected to spend six weeks in Kyiv waiting for passports to be issued. In the end, legal delays left the family stranded for more than two months. Despite this, the couple said they “wouldn’t change a thing”. But recommend others consider Ukraine carefully, as the paperwork took them longer than anticipated.
Since bringing their boys home, Amita and Sham have kept in close contact with friends they made in Ukraine. “They were generous, kind,” said Sham. “It was a kind of warmth you don’t see in the world anymore.”
Amita has not deactivated the air raid alerts on her phone. She believes people in the UK are unaware of the danger the war poses. “This is real,” she said. “Don’t think that war is not going to come here.”
Yes I have empathy for a woman who wpuld go through 15 rounds of IVF in four different European countries and three miscarriages, but at some point the someone in the industry should have stopped taking money and suggested adoption.
And was it a coincidence that they had boys or was the frozen material they sent to Ukraine sex screened beforehand?

Innovative design choices can have a massive impact in the theatre of war, so it is important to understand the principles behind their development. Recent use of low-cost cardboard drones by Ukraine, supplied by Australia, to attack targets in Russia is a good example of how this can work.
Australia has been supplying Ukraine with 100 of the drones per month from March this year as part of an aid package deal worth an estimated £15.7 million, following an agreement struck in July 2021, according to the Australian Army Defence Innovation Hub.
Emerging technologies tend to override current technologies, and in turn, this generates competitive counter-technologies. This circular relationship driven by innovation is often critical in warfare as it can provide key technological advances.
Drone technology was originally developed for military use. It was then seen to offer opportunities in the civilian sphere for logistics, delivery and disaster relief. This then in turn has offered new innovations that can translate to military applications.
Conflicts in the future will be particularly shaped by drones, which will have implications for international relations, security and defence.
The Australian firm Sypaq, an engineering and solutions company founded in 1992, created the Corvo Precision Payload Delivery System (PPDS) for use in military, law enforcement, border security and emergency services, as well as food security, asset inspection and search and rescue.
Ukrainian forces reportedly used the PDDS cardboard drones in an attack on an airfield in Kursk Oblast in western Russia on August 27. The attack damaged a Mig-29 and four Su-30 fighter jets, two Pantsir anti-aircraft missile launchers, gun systems, and an S-300 air surface-to-air missile defence system.
Design principles
The design principles behind the success of the drones revolve around several factors including the production cost, airframe material, weight, payload, range, deployment and ease of use. Other considerations include the reliability of the operating software and the ability to fly the drone in various weather conditions. Seven Network news report on SYPAQ’s cardboad drones.
Generally, small drones offer high-resolution imagery for reconnaissance in a rapidly changing theatre of war. The Corvo drone has a high-resolution camera that provides images covering a large area, transmitting footage back to its user in real time.
The importance of real-time mapping is critical in modern agile armed forces’ command and control as this can direct ground forces, heavy weapons and artillery.
In some cases, the design of small drones is concentrated on adapting the payloads to carry different types of munitions, as seen in the attack in Kursk.
The cardboard drones can carry 5kg of weight, have a wingspan of two metres and a range of 120km at a reported cost of US$3,500 (£2,750). Waxed cardboard is an ideal material as it offers weather resistance, flat-pack transportation (measuring 510mm by 760mm) and, importantly, a lightweight airframe, which enables a longer flight range and a high cruise speed of 60km/h.
Fixed-wing drones also offer longer ranges than rotor-based drones as the wings generate the lift and the airframe has less drag, so they are more energy efficient. They can also fly at higher altitudes. The drones can be launched from a simple catapult or by hand and so can be rapidly deployed.
Low-tech material, hi-tech thinking
Radar involves the transmission of electromagnetic waves, and these are reflected off any object back to a receiving antenna. Cardboard is generally harder to detect by radar – but its components, such as the battery, can be detected.
But the Corvo drone is likely to have a small signature. Radar-absorbing materials are needed to have full stealth properties. These polymers have various absorbing qualities to avoid radar detection.
Another design principle is the swarming capability of the drone. Swarms of drones can overpower air defence systems through sheer volume and or can be used as decoys in counterintelligence operations.
Swarms are highly reliant on the development of artificial intelligence, which is still an embryonic research area. But a recent drone race at ETH University in Zurich, in which AI-piloted drone beat drones controlled by world-champion drone racers, highlighted this potential.
All of these design principles and innovations have and are continuing to transform warfare and theatre operations. It is likely that small drones at low cost are likely to have further mission success in the future.

BRUNBURY, Western Australia – A group of dolphins recently guided a lost mother humpback whale and her calf to their migration route in Western Australia.
Researchers with the Dolphin Discovery Centre captured mesmerizing footage of the rare and unforgettable moment in the beauty of nature near Bunbury Back Beach on Oct. 18. The center said it received reports from beachgoers about an albino whale or an orca in the area. At the same time, the Parks and Wildlife Service also received calls about a distressed whale in the same location.
"Luckily, our research and conservation vessel was just hitting the water and responded to investigate," the center said in a social media post with the video. "It took some time to find the mystic animal since it moved into (46-foot-deep) water further offshore and could only be seen when it came up to breathe."

Royal Air Force continues to supply weapons to Ukraine
Diego Alves By Diego Alves 08/01/2023 - 18:00 in Military, War Zones
The United Kingdom continues to provide Ukraine with weapons to defend itself against the invasion of Russian forces. The supply flights began before the invasion and have not stopped since then. However, they now land in Poland, near the border with Ukraine.
To date, the United Kingdom has committed £2.3 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, with £250 million of that amount allocated to the International Fund for Ukraine. The Government has indicated its intention to overcome this financial commitment in the next fiscal year of 2023/24 and is expected to provide more details in the next Spring Declaration.
As the second largest contributor to military assistance, the United Kingdom provided weapons, such as anti-tank missiles, artillery, air defense systems, armored combat vehicles and anti-structure ammunition, including three M270 long-range multiple-launch rocket systems. In January 2023, the United Kingdom announced a substantial increase in combat support, with the supply of 14 Challenger II tanks.
In addition, the United Kingdom has contributed more than 200,000 units of “non-lethal aid”, including bulletproof vests, helmets, night vision equipment, medical supplies and winter clothing. In November 2022, the Ministry of Defense confirmed the delivery of the first of three "retired" Sea King search and rescue helicopters to Ukraine.
Tumblr media
Operation Interflex, the United Kingdom's long-term training program for the Ukrainian armed forces, has the potential to train up to 10,000 new Ukrainian soldiers already in service every 120 days. The program includes the participation of the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Lithuania and New Zealand, with the entry of Australia in January 2023. The United Kingdom expanded the program to include Ukrainian pilots and marines, as confirmed in February 2023.
In response to the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the destabilization of eastern Ukraine, the United Kingdom has been providing military assistance to Ukraine since October 2014. The initial support included a package of non-lethal military equipment and, in 2015, the United Kingdom launched Operation Orbital, which focused on non-lethal training and training of the Ukrainian armed forces.

California Wildfire Live Updates: New ‘Auto Fire’ Breaks Out
Tumblr media
TIMELINE
Tuesday, 4:00 a.m. PST The National Weather Service’s “particularly dangerous situation” red flag warning for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties is now in effect, and the agency’s LA office noted that while such warnings “do not predict fire starts, they do highlight an extremely dangerous environment that is favorable to very rapid fire growth if a fire does start.”
Tuesday, 12:15 a.m. PST Nearly 20,000 homes and businesses were without power early Tuesday in Ventura County as the area deals with the new Auto Fire, while the number of outages in Los Angeles County stands at 44,000, according to Power Outages.US.
Tuesday, 12:15 a.m. PST The Ventura County Fire Department announced that “forward progress on the Auto fire has been stopped” and the fire “was confined to the river bottom and no structures were threatened.”
Monday, 11:50 p.m. PST According to the Los Angeles Times, the Auto Fire received its name because of the large number of auto dealerships in the impacted area.
Monday, 11:45 p.m. PST A new fire, called the Auto Fire, broke out late on Monday night in Ventura county and, according to Cal Fire’s latest update, has rapidly grown to cover 56 acres.
Monday 9:00 p.m. PST The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power issued a warning that it may be forced to cut off power supply—with outages potentially lasting as long as 48 hours—in certain areas as a safety measure to prevent wildfires while the Red Flag Warning remains in effect until Friday.
Monday 8:45 p.m. PST Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued an executive order on Monday night, which aims to expedite the process of rebuilding homes in the impacted areas by requiring city officials to complete all building permitting reviews needed for reconstruction within 30 days of an application.
Monday, 2:48 p.m. PST California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed $2.5 billion in additional funding for disaster response and recovery efforts in Los Angeles, adding that if the funding is approved by the legislature it will specifically go toward “recovery and cleanup, additional wildfire preparedness, and reopening schools shuttered by the fires.”
Monday, 2:00 p.m. PST Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced nine people were charged in connection to looting carried out in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, in addition to one arson charge for a man who allegedly started a fire in the city of Azusa, which is located about 20 miles east of Altadena.
Monday, 11:12 a.m. PST The NWS, which has a red flag warning in effect for a large portion of southern California until Wednesday, says much of the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County will be in a “Particularly Dangerous Situation”—an especially severe fire warning—from early Tuesday morning until noon Wednesday. Forecasters are expecting 45 to 70 mph wind gusts and low humidity capable of creating rapid fire growth in the most hard-hit areas: “In other words, this setup is about as bad as it gets,” the agency said.
Monday, 8:10 a.m. PST Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said 23 people have been reported missing as a result of the fires—17 near the Eaton Fire and six near the Palisades Fire—and LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said six people are also missing and unaccounted-for in the city of Los Angeles, though it’s unclear if there’s overlap with Luna’s count. The death toll remains at 24, including a former child actor from Australia, a surfer from Malibu and a 67-year-old amputee who refused to leave his disabled son behind. Luna also said 34 people have been arrested since the fires began for breaking curfew and other offenses, including three arrests for drone-related incidents.
Monday, 8:10 a.m. PST The $30 million 'Super Scooper' plane that was damaged by a private drone last week has been repaired and is expected to rejoin the firefighting efforts Tuesday, after federal officials sign off, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said.
Monday, 8:10 a.m. PST Crowley said: “We are not in the clear as of yet and we must not let our guard down, as we have, right now, extreme fire behavior.”
Monday, 8:10 a.m. PST Prosecutors will announce the first set of looting and arson charges later Monday, said L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, calling the defendants “despicable and disgraceful” and warning they could face “very significant sentences” (he said the arson case isn’t related to any of the major fires).
Monday, 7:40 a.m. PST The Palisades Fire—the largest of the three blazes still burning—is now 14% under control after having grown to cover 23,713 acres, according to the latest Cal Fire update, while the Eaton Fire covers 14,117 acres and is 33% contained.

I live in Bangkok now.
A quick breakdown of my life here:
* I rent a fully furnished two-beddy place in Bangkok, about $1,700 per month which includes an amazing gym, 60m pool, social areas / meeting rooms etc and great international vibe. It's in the hipster neighbourhood of Klong Toei, nice and central and has two parking spots. Cleaner cost me about $30 per month which is vacuum, mop, laundry, windows, dish washing. The internet here is 2gbps/1gbps and cost me $50 per month.
* My landlord repainted, upgraded the bed and supplied a great smart TV *for free* and **because I asked**. In Australia, landlords will spit on you for asking them to fix a broken stove.
* I bough a condo in the North which I AirBNB and holiday in, $140k for a two beddy with nice facilities - if it wasn't for the burning season, I'd probably move there one day.
* I do freelance work which nets me about \~$80k p.a and my partner works part-time and she makes $40k.
* We work probably 30 hours per week, my partner a bit less, and nobody cares where we are, just that our work gets done.
* This is the land of smiles. Everyone is friendly, courteous, and conscientious. In fact, when foreigners here get too aggressive or kareny, I've see Thais knock them the fuck out. Public freak outs and escalation are not welcome here.
* The food culture here is amazing and its super social, staying out late and doing bbq with friends is fantastic. It's so affordable and the city is geared toward staying out late, eating and drinking beer.
* I ride my scooter sometimes without a helmet, and there's no army of neurotics to go "WHAT A DICK HEAD HOW MUCH YOU GOING TO COST ME WHEN YOU SMASH YOUR HEAD IN MATE? ...... yeah, we Aussies are pretty easy going" lol.
* Cheap flights around Asia.
* I fly my drone without lodging flight plans to CASA.
What would get me back to Australia? Nothing. I hate the crab mentality, finance bros, and hustle culture. I hate the holes and home economy. I hate how much you pay for inferior goods and services. I hate the air of superiority from a land of people who happen to live on top of vast resources. I hate blue suit wankers.
Aussies have so little emotional intelligence and empathy, that people go around angry all the friggin time and they're too stupid with fragile egos to work out why they're miserable, so they put that on you. They'd be happy if only *you* would just live up to their idiotic standards.
Australian companies are so poorly run too. I'm down to do a thing for a set price by a set date, but I won't be doing any HR mandated training modules, getting any more cereal-box certifications, adhering to set hours or set working locations, nor 'taking ownership' to cover the fact leadership doesn't do this.
